INTRODUCTION -- UPDATES -- ROMANCE ARCHIVE -- LEMON ARCHIVE -- 2003 FALL CONTEST ARCHIVE

It has been so long since the Heero and Duo muses have attacked but here they are. Hm, must be that third year in college thing or something. I hope you all enjoy the fic.

Summary: Duo on a rainy day
Pairing: 1 + 2
Warnings: Yaoi, angst, death, and sad stuff
Spoilers: A different ending to Endless Waltz
Disclaimer: Gundam Wing doesn't belong to me. If it did it would probably be longer with some X-rated episodes. The song belongs to Evanescence. If it were mine then I'd have money.
Notes: This fic is just a different look on the ending to Endless Waltz. It's not a happy look but it's a look. Don't worry it didn't happen like this, it's just a fic. We all know that at the end of Endless Waltz, Heero went to Duo and they lived happily ever after.

Hello
by Chibi

//playground school bell rings
again//

Children ran out of the schools in the city happily. The smiles on their faces were so bright that they put the sun to shame, causing it to hide behind gloomy gray clouds that hinted at the approaching storm. Tiny feet clapped over the sidewalks that lead to the school buses which waited to be stuffed with kids. Cars surrounded the bus on all sides, anxious parents looking out for their little quarterbacks and princesses so they could shelter them in the protection of their vehicles from the approaching rain.

It was supposed to be a huge storm, and it would blanket the city shortly. The school bells could still be heard, but this time the rumbling of thunder accompanied the ringing of the bells.

//rain clouds come to play
again//

The storm had made its entrance into the city. Loud claps of thunder frightened the small children, turning their excitement about getting out of school to desperation of getting home. Electrical fields of lightening sparkled across the sky and the raindrops were big and numerous, soaking the entire city.

He watched it all from the window of his apartment with little interest.

It always seemed to rain these days, so the scene below him was a familiar one. He could hear the school bells off in the distance, and he could hear some of the school children screaming and squealing over the rain as they ran into the apartment complex with their parents who had just rescued them from the rain. It was the type of rain that would depress all the children because it ruined their chances of playing outside.

It wouldn't ruin his mood though, because it was the type of rain that lovers would watch together. They would snuggle under a warm blanket and share cups of hot chocolate. No television or radio would be needed because staring at the rain from each other's arms would be enough.

He watched the rain alone, clutching onto a mug of hot chocolate. He sat in the window, the blanket he was using discarded carelessly to the ground. His eyes stared at each and every raindrop, violet pools watching each drop splash into the pavement below. He wondered how many people were watching the rain right now with the one they loved. Because he...

//has no one told you she's not breathing?//

Explosions. Bright orange flames heating up the sky. The entrance to the underground base which held the Vice Foreign Minister captive being destroyed.

The suit which caused the inevitable end of the battle, no the war, falling to the ground in several charred pieces.

"HEERO!"

//hello//

Because he too had someone he loved. He had someone to watch the rain with and he had someone to snuggle with under a comfortable blanket, to share hot chocolate with. He had the same thing.

//i am your mind//

He stopped watching the rain when he felt a very gentle and loving hand caress the side of his face. He smiled, leaning into the touch. His lips parted and spoke a name, the name of the one he loved.

"Heero."

//giving you someone to talk to//

He could hear his beloved whisper his name. He always loved it when he said his name. His voice felt like silk against his skin, and was warmer then any blanket he could ever buy in a store. He could feel lips brush against his in a light breeze of a kiss, fingers ghosting against his skin. He could feel the kiss, deep in his heart he could feel it and he closed his eyes to savor the moment.

//hello//

Duo stared at the remains of Wing Zero from the cockpit of his Deathscythe. Around him he could hear what sounded like the end of the long battle, and the war. Outside of the Gundam the soldiers of Marimeia were throwing down their weapons, burning them in flames full of regret and sorrow for what they had done. Duo's comrades, the other Gundam pilots, were watching the flames as a signal that the war was finally over.

Duo was still watching Wing Zero.

//if i smile and don't
believe//

Heero was o.k. He had to be o.k. He always came out of things like this just fine. He was fine, perfectly fine.

The smoke continued to rise up from the broken Wing Zero, and there was still no sign of Heero anywhere. Duo could see a figure running over to the rubble where his Heero was. Honey wheat strands of long hair were captured in a bright yellow ribbon, and as she ran each strand trailed over her freshly pressed suit that spoke volumes of sophistication and authority despite her young age. There were tears in her baby blue eyes, Duo knew there were, and he watched as she dug through the rubble to find the pilot of the suit. To find Heero.

Duo didn't cry, he didn't even get worried. He just watched, a smile on his face.

"He's in there, and he's just fine."

//soon i know i'll awake
from this dream//

Relena moved piece after piece of Wing Zero, her hands moving faster then they ever did before. For a second she wondered why no one else had come to help her, especially Duo.

"He's in shock." She muttered to herself, her voice soft and choked full of tears. "Come on Heero, you have to be o.k. It's all over, you can't leave when the fight is over." She kept digging, but she stopped when her eyes landed on a body. A body that was so badly beaten and broken that it almost looked unrecognizable.

But that face, she knew that face like she knew the back of her hand.

There was so much blood, and it painted his clothes and the scraps of metal around him. His brown hair, which could never be tamed by any man, was caked in blood, his blood. His eyes, she couldn't see the color of his eyes since they were being hidden from the world by his closed eyelids.

He wasn't breathing.

Behind her, Duo watched everything from the inside of Deathscythe, still smiling. Heero was o.k. He could see Relena lifting him up and carrying him over towards the Gundams. Heero was just fine, just like he said he would be. Relena was just crying because she was so happy that Heero was o.k. Heero was just unconscious, tired from fighting and relieved that everything was over. Those were happy tears, and all that blood was just from the blood of battle.

Heero was fine.

//don't try to fix me i'm not broken//

Relena walked to the center of the battlefield where all the soldiers and remaining Gundams were. She couldn't stop crying, all she could do was lie Heero's body down by the fires of the burning weapons. The fires he worked so hard to create, the fires that showed everyone that he had succeeded in his mission. The war was over but...

"He's o.k." Duo spoke very softly through the comm. unit of his Deathscythe, watching the flames burn behind the one he loved most. "He's o.k. He won, his mission is over. He'll be fine."

"Duo..." Quatre was the first to respond to him, his voice crying and full of tears. "Duo... Heero is..."

"No he's not."

"Duo. I'm sorry." Quatre couldn't say anymore, instead he opened up Sandrock and slid down its rope, touching the ground and approaching Relena. Duo watched the two of them hug each other, tears running down their faces.

Tears of joy that had to be it. They couldn't be sad tears because Heero wasn't dead. He. Was. Not. Dead!

But Heavyarms opened up and Trowa slid down, and even he looked like he was going to crack. His eyes were swimming in a sorrowful river of tears that he didn't want to shed, but Duo could see that one did manage to escape. Trowa just stood by Heero's body, looking down at it while Quatre tried his best to comfort Relena, but it wasn't working. She was crying and screaming, so loudly that Duo could hear it.

"It's not fair! It's over! It's over he shouldn't be gone!"

"Maxwell." Wufei appeared on Duo's view screen. He wasn't crying, he had no tears in his eyes but he did look upset. "Go down there. Go down there and say goodbye to him."

"No."

"Maxwell..."

"No! He's not dead, he's not!" Why were there tears in his eyes now? Why did he feel like he was going to cry? There was no reason to cry over Heero, because he wasn't dead.

They were all wrong, all of them! Relena was wrong. Trowa and Quatre were wrong. Wufei was wrong. The soldiers... the soldiers... who were standing... by the fires... circling around them and Heero's body... who were taking off their hats and bowing their heads down in sorrow...

"You're all wrong! He's not gone he's not dead stop saying it! He's going to be just fine!" Everyone watched Deathscythe take off to the sky. Duo completely shut off all forms of communication, because he didn't want to hear those lies. They were all liars, all of them.

The rain soaked over the black Gundam that flew away from the battlefield. The rain joined the tears of those on the battlefield. It sprinkled over the fires, and it washed away the blood on Heero's face.

But it didn't wake him up.

//hello//

Heero Yuy was gone, he had left the world. No one would ever see him again... except for one person. One person who would continue to smile, who would and could continue to see Heero and always would.

Because he wasn't dead.

//i am the lie//

"So you think we should destroy the Gundams?" Duo nodded and Trowa frowned just a bit. "Last time we tried that, they were needed again."

"We won't need them anymore." Duo looked out to the grassy field where Deathscythe, Heavyarms, and Sandrock stood together as if they were old friends. "Heero's mission is over, so they are no longer needed."

"Duo... are you sure?" Quatre's voice was soft and full of nothing but concern for his friend.

"I'm sure." Duo held the detonator close. "Because Heero told me so."

//living for you so you can hide//

Both Trowa and Quatre watched as Duo walked away over to the three Gundams. He had to destroy them, he had to complete the final mission.

The final mission that Heero trusted him to complete. The last mission that would truly end the war, that would truly start a world full of peace. Heero was there with him, he could feel him there, but he needed Duo to complete the mission for him. He was just... too tired from all the fighting... to do it himself.

At least, that's what Duo told himself. Because Heero wasn't dead. He hadn't died.

Because Duo couldn't live without Heero, so how could he be dead if he was still here?

//don't cry//

He didn't understand why he was thinking about all of that now. All he knew was that he felt Heero's lips on his, and that flooded him with so many memories that he felt like he was drowning. He could feel the tears forming in his eyes, but he didn't want to cry.

Crying would only mean that he accepted what everyone else was telling him. He would accept the fact that Heero's body never moved and he never opened his eyes. He would have to accept that he was the liar, that for the first time in his life he was lying about something. He was living in a lie.

Shinigami never lied.

//suddenly i know i'm not sleeping//

Duo opened his eyes, and cried for the first time ever since the war ended. The rain fell harder outside but he paid no attention to it. Instead he looked around the apartment, the empty apartment. There were boxes everywhere, wide open but nothing was unpacked. There were random things scattered around the empty home, such as dishes when they needed to be used to eat, and clothes when he needed to change.

The only closed boxes were the ones with... Heero's things in them...

//hello//

He moved away from the window and went to the boxes, his fingers brushing over the boxes that had Heero's name on them. This was going to be their home but then...

//i'm still here//

But then... Heero... died.

//all that's left of yesterday//

Duo crumbled to the ground in front of the box, crying against it. He was all that was left, all that was left of the love him and Heero shared. He was finally able to see why he was really still here even if Heero wasn't. He had to keep going, he had to live because he was all that was left of their beautiful relationship. That's what Heero wanted, he wanted him to live. He left him the gift of a peaceful world, and all this time he continued to live in the past and ignore what Heero had given him.

Duo got up from the ground, wiped his tears away with the sleeve of his shirt, and unpacked.
