Way We Are
by Hellfire_angel

After so many years of living with him, it never seemed to cross our minds to rejoice in how we met.

I mean, at the beginning of our lives, we were fighting a war. One that was a kill or be killed kind of deal and back then I still called myself the god of death and dressed in a priest garb for goodness sake. Heero had been the first of the other pilots that I met and even though he was so quiet and sullen, there was still just something about him that drew me in.

Like a moth to a flame or how ever else you want to describe it as, but no matter how I tried, he never seemed to notice me. Well, that's what I had been thinking at the time.

Heero just couldn't understand the concept of relying on someone else. He was trained the way he was to do everything for the mission and even then, he was supposed to give up his own life if he failed. I think he finally started to understand the concept of having a friend when Trowa took him in and nursed him back to health after his self detonation, even though he was a bit wary of Trowa's motives.

Although, we all clicked with someone else in our circle of pilots. Trowa clicked better with Quatre more so than Heero or me and even though Quat and I are good friends, I couldn't share the same intimacy with him as I do with Heero. And surprisingly enough, it was the fact he busted me out of an Oz prison cell that convinced me more than anything that he did care even though he was reluctant to show it.

Even after the war ended and we went our separate ways, I knew it was only going to be a matter of time before we saw each other again. It was maybe half a year after the Marimeia incident that I got to see Heero again. I found him sleeping on my front porch, head pillowed on his satchel and curled up in a fetal position, when I went to get the morning paper. It was then he informed me he needed a place to stay and asked if he could stay with me.

I, of course, said 'yes.' I was so happy to see him after he was gone for so long that I helped him up and fed him breakfast.

At first, he didn't tell me where he had been or what he did during his absence, but little by little, I discovered he had been doing some freelance programing for online customers. That was, until someone dug a bit deeper into his records and discovered he was a gundam pilot. His landlord had kicked him out because of it, as well and for a while he traveled the long road and had been sleeping in motel rooms until he found out where I was living.

He said he was surprised I wasn't with Hilde anymore since he thought we would stick together. I told him we had for a while until she met her boyfriend and I let him help her with the scrap yard and I went to join Preventer. That bit of information perked his interest, since I had told him once the war was over I didn't want to fight anymore and neither did he.

It was much later that day I explained to him, I wasn't a field agent, merely a programmer as well as a bomb squad instructor to teach the new recruits how to defuse bombs as well as use them for situations they couldn't get out of. As I let him get settled in with me, he shared a bit more about himself and even began to smile more often. We developed a bit of a daily habit. I would usually get up first and make breakfast then either wake Heero up or just turn on the coffee maker which would make him get up any way. Then after Heero became my partner at Preventer we would do our work and either go out for lunch together and bring Wufei along if he was so inclined or go down to the cafe.

After putting in some more tasks for the day, I would drive us home or we would go out somewhere eat and watch a movie or play basketball, or do something else that we were into that week. If we didn't go out Heero would make us supper and then we'd watch the news and do whatever we felt like doing.

Some night we would play cards, or watch a late night show and then we go to our respective rooms and turn in for the night. It was about nine or so months later that I began to notice the looks Heero was giving me. Just a little glance now and then, but I also noticed how he would sit closer to me when watched a movie or TV. If we went out shopping he didn't wander off, or tell me to shut up as often as he used to during the war. It was as if he always wanted to be around me.

This revelation came as sort of a relief to me. I loved having Heero around, watching my back and just being there for when I needed someone to talk to. His notice of me didn't turn me off of the ideas that used to swirl through my head during the war. Instead, I found myself wanting to let him get closer to me in his own way. I let him do what he wanted and silently encouraged him to continue. If he decided to stop after a while, I would turn the tables on him to help him understand that I wanted him too.

My plan was unnecessary though. There was this tech Janice that always had something wrong with her computer and liked to come down and get me to have a look at it for her. She was a nice girl, but a bit too pushy for her own good. I went back to her office like I always did and discovered a rather nasty virus eating up her files and it took me a while to clean it up.

Well, I guess I had been gone too long in Heero's opinion because he came looking for me just as Janice was asking me out to dinner. I had said, 'I would love to...' just as Heero walked in the door. A shocked expression was written across his face as Janice was grinning with glee like a mad woman and I couldn't continue me dismissal of her offer. My inability to do so made both Heero and her think I had accepted the date and caused Heero to mutter that he was sorry he had barged in and turned to leave in a hurry.

My mind chose that second to add two and two together and knock me on my ass as an, oh shit registered as the answer. I quickly told Janice her computer should work just fine now and finished my statement of that, 'I would have really loved to, but I couldn't.' As I uttered an apology, I all but raced after Heero.

I went back to our office because I thought he would be there, but there was no sign of him. Quickly thinking and ruling out some possibilities, I decided to check the break room, and the bathrooms on the floor first and then the security cameras if I couldn't find him.

The break room had a few agent inside sipping coffee and eating some danishes someone brought in, but no Heero. So doubling back I checked the bathroom, and in doing so I found my wayward partner. He had splashed some water on his face and it ran down his face like tears when he turned to look at me for a second then turn back to washing his face.

I came up behind to put a hand on his back only to flinch as he practically jumped away from me. He snarled at me, saying shouldn't I be going out with that girl. I gently told him, he had only heard half of what I was going to say. I said I told Janice, 'I would love to go, but I couldn't.' He seemed startled by that and asked me why I had declined. As I made my way closer to him I put my arms around him and tugged him into my arms and whispered in his ear that I already had a dinner date with someone, and that someone was him.

The smile I got to see made my body tingle with happiness and it warmed me even more when he said he was glad I accepted the invite and kissed me for the very first time.

To this day, we still celebrate that day we had our first kiss in the men's bathroom. It's also the day Heero said he loved me and wanted to stay with me always. I remember that feeling even now, five years later, and still Heero surprises me with all the things he does.

I had to stay at the office a little later today to debug the sever, but I told Heero he could go home early and I was a bit surprised when he did it without any fuss. Usually he wants to stay and help me, but this time, he didn't. When I got home, all the lights were off except the one leading to the kitchen. As I entered the room, I could smell something delicious cooking and Heero standing by the stove stirring the contents of a pot wearing only his low-cut jeans.

Keeping my footsteps light, I crept up behind him and wrapped my arms around his middle, caressing the soft skin of his stomach and chest and kissing a shoulder.

"What are making, love?"

"Just something tasty." He said and turned his head so he could kiss me good and proper.

"Mm. As good as that smells, I think I'll nibble on you for an appetizer." He chuckled at me as he turned back to looking into the contents of the pot. I snuck a glance and found gravy to be the source of his attention. The other pans on the stove held mashed potatoes, and sweetened cranberries. It almost looked like Thanksgiving dinner, but I was willing to bet there was a baked chicken in the oven instead of a turkey.

Keeping to my word and nibbling on him, I pulled an earlobe into my mouth and gently played with it with teeth and tongue. I felt little shivers pass through him as I played, but knew he was loving it too much to ask me to stop.

"As much as I'm enjoy your attention, I think you'd better slow down so you can eat some supper before you get to the dessert."

"You mean you're not the main course?" I asked him in mock startlement.

"If the food wasn't so hot, I could be all three." I kissed him gently on the cheek and smiled, knowing we would continue our first kiss anniversary after we feasted on all of Heero's hard work.

"I think I like you all natural, baby. Warm, soft, and with a gooey center, if you're a good boy."

"I will be. Now, help me set the table so I can show you the fireworks after dinner."

And I saw them all right. All three shows. What can I say? That's just the way we are!
