Wouldn't It Be Nice? by WickedGame
I used the tip of my toe to push the porch swing again. It was one of those lazy summer evenings, the kind that come and go to quickly in my opinion. And these days I liked to spend those fleeting summer nights out on our porch, swinging away and watching the world pass me by. "I remember the first night I came to your mom and dad's house after we'd just started dating," Heero's voice interrupted my random thoughts and I turned to look at my husband, the man I'd been married to for the past ten years. I smiled as I remembered that night. "Dad blocked your way into the house and demanded to know whether or not your intentions were honorable. I half expected him to bring out his hunting rifle and aim it at your head!" Heero sat down on the swing next to me and used his toe to propel us into movement once more. "That night was the first time I kissed you." I laughed. "If I remember correctly, I kissed you, not the other way around. The way you analyze things I'd be surprised if you were still weighing the advantages and disadvantages of kissing me when I leaned in and just did it." "You always were like that, impulsive and ready to act," Heero said softly, taking my hand. We swung in silence and watched as yet another neighbor walked by with her dog. Our dog was safely tucked away in her corner of the living room, probably chewing on her favorite toy. "We were in such a hurry to grow up," I remarked after a while. "It was always about what we were going to do when we were older. The adventures we'd have, the places we'd go, the things we'd see..." "I remember thinking how nice it'd be to be able to say goodnight to you and just roll over and go to sleep, without leaving your side," Heero's thumb swept over the skin on the back of my hand and I smiled. "I didn't think we'd ever make it." "But we did," I said with a grin. "We made it all the way until we were adults. I've never had to show so much self-restraint in my life!" "I remember that night like it was yesterday," Heero said fondly, looking off into space. "I'd never seen anything as beautiful as you were..." "And never will again!" I laughed out loud. "You're lucky to have me, Heero Yuy. No one could put up with you the way I do." Heero leaned against me and rested his head on my shoulder. The time passed, and the moon rose higher into the nighttime sky. I was just about ready to go inside when Heero spoke again. "I wouldn't want anyone else to put up with me. Rise or fall, you're the one I want by my side." I smiled gently and kissed the top of his head before using my toe to swing us once again.
The End
Archivist's note: This story is based on lyrics from the song by The Beach Boys:
Wouldn't it be nice if we were older
You know its gonna make it that much better
Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
Happy times together we've been spending
Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true Wouldn't it be nice
You know it seems the more we talk about it |
