Ethereal
by Ralphiere

Ethereal. That was the only word to describe the way he looked when I found him. I knew he'd gone to get a glimpse of the lake while I unpacked the gear and set up camp. It wasn't so much that I didn't want his help, nor did I send him away, but he knew we'd just bicker over where to put up the tent, and how to make a fire pit if he'd hung around. I love him that much more knowing he's willing to leave me with my control issues, even on vacation. Yes I know I have control issues, thank you very much, but this isn't about me. No ... this moment is about him.

It was dusk when I'd finally finished organizing camp and set out to look for him. I found him sitting on the water's edge with his arms wrapped around his knees and his braid trailing behind him in the sand. He was staring across the water, and I could see enough of his profile to know that his mouth was curved into a small smile. He looked completely relaxed. I leaned against a tree and watched silently as the heat rose off the lake in misty tendrils, spilling across the land and making it slowly disappear. The mist crept higher, curling around him in a way that made a twinge of jealousy go through me. Ridiculous I know, but true just the same. It wrapped itself almost lovingly around his body, swirling up around him, appearing to almost caress the length of hair that was slowly disappearing in the fog.

The sun dipped below the horizon bathing the lake in deeper shadow, and I saw him shiver slightly. Whether it be the encroaching dampness, or the eerie feeling that fell over the lake with the loss of the sun I didn't know, but suddenly he seemed ... vulnerable, as if the mist would suddenly engulf and claim him for its own. The jealousy returned, prodding me to move.

"Duo?" I kept my voice soft, not wanting to startle him as I walked through the swirling white towards my lover. He turned towards me and my chest tightened at the awe I saw mirrored in his eyes. He opened his hand and we watched the mist play across his palm before he blew it away like a puff of smoke.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?"

I didn't look at the lake as I answered, slowly taking him in. "Beautiful," I agreed as I stopped at his side and offered him a hand up. He took it with a grin, his body appearing out of the cloud he'd been sitting in like a magic trick. He brushed the sand off his backside before wrapping his arms around my waist and leaning into me. We just stood there quietly for a moment, looking at the point where the sun had disappeared behind the horizon. "Come on," I whispered, kissing his temple. "It's getting chilly, we can start a fire."

He looked up, raising a finger and pointing to the first star to grace the night sky. "Make a wish."

I smiled and nodded, making a wish before pulling him closer. "Lets go back to camp and you can help make it come true."

"I hope it has something to do with marshmallows," he said with a laugh as he took me by the hand and led me back towards camp. Now marshmallows ... I could honestly say that had potential.
